About the Native Americans Against the Name There are many tribes that are against the Redskins name, including: the Cherokee nation of Oklahoma, the Hoh Indian tribe, the Oneida Indian nation, the San Carlos Apache Indians, and many more. These nations strongly believe that the Redskins name is extremely offensive. The Hoh Indian tribe is located in Washington state and the Oneida Indian nation is in Wisconsin. Washington Redskins Franchise History The Washington Redskins were established in the year 1932, as the Boston Braves. They were later changed to the Boston Redskins to be similar to the Boston Red Sox. Shortly after, they moved to Washington due to the lack of fans. As they struggled to win games, owner George Preston Marshall hired the great Vince Lombardi. He produced a winning record but died just a year after.
The franchise has worn out multiple owners and numerous coaches. Although they haven't had many successes, the team has made 23 playoff appearances and have won 13 division championships. The Redskins have also won five conference championships and five super bowls. |
